This manuscript describes a 3-arm randomized controlled trial led by our partners at Mayo Clinic to test the effectiveness of a digital and clinical intervention for smoking cessation for people undergoing lung cancer screening.

This study examined the impact of participating in the EX Community on smoking abstinence. It is the first study to demonstrate that connecting with other people in an online community is prospectively associated with higher quit rates.

For over 30 years, researchers have tested interventions to enhance or create social support to improve quit rates. It hasn’t worked. This commentary offers a novel perspective and path forward for smoking cessation research.

Language matters. Researchers have used phrases like “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)” to measure and track e-cigarette use. We found that smokers use different terms, and that these have changed over time.

This review of 41 randomized controlled trials of Internet interventions was included in the Surgeon General’s 2020 Report on Smoking Cessation, which recommended Internet interventions for smoking cessation and highlighted the role of employers and health plans in reducing tobacco use in the U.S.

Led by our partners at the University of Iowa, this study examined the social network structure of the EX Community and explored links between social network position and quitting outcomes.
